Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
