A Memorable Night of Discovery This group of artists began their evening to photograph the galactic core over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon. They thought they would be blessed to get good weather that evening, but their shooting session transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” an individual involved stated. Upon examining his files for a Milky Way panorama and discovered he had captured scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the individual explained. “We just could not believe it – it resulted in screaming and shouting and numerous expressions in the night.” Defining Red Sprites Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, caused by electrical storms. Unlike traditional lightning that aims at the surface, these events ascend towards the upper atmosphere, creating shapes that resemble columns, tapered shapes or even jellyfish. The first photograph of a red sprite was captured – accidentally – in the late eighties, by a team at the a academic organization. Brief and Ethereal Sightings The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but one photographer was fortunate. “I happened to be looking directly at a sprite when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence viewing the right part of the heavens and I witnessed a short crimson illumination,” he said. Seeing the occurrences was a dream for the artist, an award-winning dark sky artist. “It appears as if you witness something that is not real, it’s very ethereal … there is an intense scarlet hue that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to observe.” Skill-Based and Artistic Mastery Capturing a such an event needs a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of science and artistic vision, the individual said. “This is a highly complex category of art that’s highly fulfilling as well.” Another photographer commented it was counted as the “most extraordinary nights” of his existence. “I witnessed the starry river illuminating above the horizon while these giant scarlet filaments of light moved above a storm at a great distance,” he said. A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs showing crimson flashes and the galactic core from the southern perspective in one frame. “It was one of those moments when you realize you are seeing an event that may not recur in your lifetime.”
