π Share this article The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to Your World The winter content update for Minecraft has landed β and it brings with it the first new weapon introduced into the title since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it could very well revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium. A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem The Mayhem Mounts drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and updates centered around animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the development team had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool. "We knew initially that we aimed for a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we wanted it to be mounted combat," explained a lead developer. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we ran our trials and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose." If you're asking yourself whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your friends on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack ideally crafted for it. "[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest use cases for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead adds. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and inflict more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [itβs] perfect for jousting on horses." Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures The wild enjoyment can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and going out and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she hints. In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it deserves to be an competitive event without delay. Another major addition in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is modeled after the seashells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also conserve your oxygen levels, so there's no need to return to the surface for a breath. The rest of the additions are primarily things that seek your demise, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the zombie Nautilus β or the regular one, for that matter β with a spiky fish. "We've long considered this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the right time to also introduce something for underwater," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for sea mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game." She also adds that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] add variety to what you encounter underwater." Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements Other additions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. Camel husks have an excellent design that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back. The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some much-anticipated adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can cross waterways while atop a horse. Also, high-tier barding is now craftable at the workbench, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it deserves. A Spicy Send-Off for the Year In summary, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own β and the potential for chaos β would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous. The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
