'The last stretch proved absolutely grueling': UK pair complete extraordinary journey in Down Under after paddling across the vast Pacific

One last sunrise to sunset. Another day battling through the unforgiving ocean. One more day of blistered hands holding onto unyielding oars.

But after more than 8,000 nautical miles across the ocean – an extraordinary 165-day expedition through Pacific waters that included near brushes with cetaceans, malfunctioning navigation equipment and chocolate shortages – the ocean presented a final test.

A gusting 20-knot wind approaching Cairns kept pushing their compact craft, their boat Velocity, off course from land that was now achingly close.

Loved ones gathered on land as a scheduled lunchtime finish evolved into afternoon, then 4pm, then twilight hours. Ultimately, at 6:42 PM, they arrived at the Cairns marina.

"The concluding hours proved absolutely punishing," Rowe stated, eventually on solid ground.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we genuinely believed we might fail. We drifted outside the navigational path and considered swimming the remaining distance. To finally be here, following years of planning, seems absolutely amazing."

The Epic Journey Begins

The British pair – aged 28 and 25 respectively – set out from Peruvian shores in early May (an earlier April effort was stopped by equipment malfunction).

Across nearly half a year on water, they covered approximately 50 sea miles each day, rowing in tandem during the day, one rowing alone at night while her partner rested minimal sleep in a cramped cabin.

Perseverance and Difficulties

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a saltwater conversion device and an integrated greens production unit, the duo depended upon a less-than-reliable solar system for limited energy demands.

For much of their journey across the vast Pacific, they operated without navigation tools or beacon, making them essentially invisible, hardly noticeable to maritime traffic.

The pair have borne 9-metre waves, navigated shipping lanes and survived violent tempests that, on occasion, disabled all electrical systems.

Groundbreaking Success

Still they maintained progress, one stroke after another, through scorching daylight hours, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They established a fresh milestone as the initial female duo to paddle over the South Pacific, non-stop and unsupported.

Additionally they collected in excess of Β£86k (179,000 Australian dollars) benefiting the outdoor education charity.

Existence Onboard

The duo made every effort to stay connected with society outside their tiny vessel.

Around day one-forty, they reported a "chocolate emergency" – diminished to merely two remaining pieces with over 1,000 miles remaining – but granted themselves the pleasure of unwrapping a portion to celebrate England's Red Roses victory in the World Cup.

Personal Reflections

Payne, from a landlocked part of Yorkshire, was unacquainted with maritime life prior to her independent Atlantic journey during 2022 establishing a record.

Another ocean now falls to her accomplishments. But there were moments, she admitted, when failure seemed possible. As early as day six, a route across the globe's vastest waters appeared insurmountable.

"Our energy was failing, the desalination tubes ruptured, however following multiple fixes, we accomplished a workaround and simply continued struggling with little power throughout the remaining journey. Each time problems occurred, we simply exchanged glances and went, 'naturally it happened!' But we kept going."

"It was really great to have Jess as a teammate. What was great was that we worked hard together, we resolved issues as a team, and we were always working towards the same goals," she stated.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Before her Pacific triumph, she crossed the Atlantic by rowing, trekked England's coastal trail, ascended Mount Kenya and biked through Spain. Further adventures likely await.

"We had such a good time together, and we're already excited to plan new adventures together as well. No other partner would have sufficed."
