🔗 Share this article 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure. My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games. A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry. From Classic Icons to Modern Mania Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. But, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times. A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games. Charting the Croak Comeback To understand this rise, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots. The findings paint a clear picture: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025. This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming looks especially powerful. Designing for a Sticky Tongue Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs have built-in creative potential for game developers. Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game. Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas. Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer. The Leap Into 2026 So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming. When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
